Neutrino interactions yielding strange particles are reviewed for the
purpose of identifying exclusive channels amenable to high statistics
investigation with the NuMI beam. As a case study, we consider that
such reactions are initiated by atmospheric neutrinos in
underground detectors, presenting backgrounds to searches for
nucleon decay modes favored by SUSY grand unification.
A fine-grained NuMI near detector with approx 5 ns time resolution
can address these background uncertainties via precision measurement of
selected neutrino strangeness production cross sections and their energy
